It’s rich, flavorful and aromatic, though not enough for me to give it an A mind you, but superior to most Juras I’ve had. Samaroli’s ability, and opportunity, to pick out great casks. Samaroli Isle of Jura 16 years is a great example of Silvan S.

Light bodied, it has a simple and easy texture with almost no burn Well balanced with malt, spice and wood keeping the sweetness in check. Med-long and malt heavy with notes of fruit, vanilla, ash and oak. If it were to stop at that it would be cloying and overly sweet, but luckily some notes of salty brine, whisky spice and wood to even things out and create a multi-faceted flavor. There is a nice subtle backing of malt, vanilla and a slight floral character with a gentle sweetness moving beneath it all.Ī nice tasty malt, dried fruit, red licorice, yellow cake and vanilla frosting slide effortlessly across the palate. Price: $180 Samaroli Isle of Jura 16 years ReviewĬrisp green apples, warm gooey honey, sweet ripe apricots and ripe pears start things off. Combine cherry / unique casks with the fact that they often re-cask and finish the whiskies themselves and you’re getting something you literally can’t get from anyone else.

This is why a bottle of Samaroli costs so much more than most other NDPs. Located in Italy he traveled to Scotland, made friends and forged partnerships with distilleries that, to this day, give him and his company access to the most cherry and unique casks many distilleries have. Samaroli began his career in 1968 and was the first non-Scottish NDP of Scottish single malts. There is a character in this bottle that I have yet to find in other Juras and I’m actually able to call it a good whisky, which is something I was beginning to think I’d never get say about another Jura.įor those not familiar with Samaroli, Mr. In fact outside of their peated “mistake” whisky (distilled 1996), this is my favorite Jura. It showed me that Jura can indeed create some mighty tasty whisky. And when you’re having fun, it’s impossible to remain impassive. This Samaroli Isle of Jura 16 years is a vatting of two different casks of Jura whisky that were distilled in ’97, bottled in ’13 and combined is something of a revelation to me. There is certainly no boredom with this whisky, which holds the attention with an eccentric and distinct character that cannot leave you indifferent. The finish is not very long and bitterish, of spices, sugar icing, propolis and tobacco.
ISLE OF JURA WHISKEY REVIEW FULL
Once it reaches the palate, a generous spice (black pepper and cinnamon) accompanies a full body that is still not very prone to complacency: tropical fruit, pear and caramel intertwine with anise, liquorice root, almond and accentuated balsamic tones, and there is a return to that idea of milk gone bad, which may sound unpleasant but has its place. Over time, it becomes warmer and more enveloping, with a remarkable persistence. Pear, pineapple, marzipan, lacquered wood, lemon, caramel, sour milk, a hint of beeswax: not exactly the most pleasing of profiles, but it shows a definite and interesting personality. Given the right amount of time to rest in the glass, the initial metallic vein loses strength to make way for a softer nose, albeit with some rough edges.

Single cask ex-Bourbon, cask strength, with a 1992 distillate put into 98 bottles in 2020 (and, despite this, at a price I’d say very affordable), part of the Living World series.Īnother single cask has recently been released, in the Retro series, with a twelve year old whisky also from ex-Bourbon. Under these evocatively illustrated labels you can find both rums and whiskies, and of the latter about a hundred releases have been made so far.Īnd what better way to approach an independent than with a single cask from a distillery let’s say controversial as Jura, which has never really made a dent in the hearts of enthusiasts (including mine). We introduce another independent bottler to our blog, from Germany, born just over ten years ago on the initiative of the online shop eSpirits Whisky.
